  • October/November 2007
Hey, great news! Doteasy finally decided to upgrade to what looks to be a more reliable email system than they've had for the last few years - AND they've upgraded your storage limit (most are now 5MB). As of October 29, 2007, I've been testing the system, including a new spam filter I've built since you can use those in this one for free. It seems to be working, but is excluding some wanted emails, so I will continue working on this in hopes I can extend an offer to all of you Doteasy users soon to add that to your email and reduce some of the unwanted spam you're getting.

Below's the email from Doteasy about the upgrades they're doing, with a useful link about the upgrade process along with the new email setup instructions just in case you have any problems sending or receiving mail (
most won't, and won't need to change anything ) which will be taking place on most domain email servers by the end of November.

Here is a link to the
Smartmail Help, which should be very useful to those of you who would like to tweak your email stuff yourself. As I said before, little to no tweaking should be necessary, other than if you want to try your hand yourself at implementing some content filters. If you do so, I would highly recommend (1) creating a "spam" folder to (2) have the spam content filter move the unwanted emails to and (3) logging in daily to check your email on the web, including that spam folder, for a period of weeks to make sure you're not losing things you need to get.

Subject: Important - Email Server Upgrade for getreadytosellohio.com

    Dear _____,

In accordance to our continued email service upgrades, we would like to announce the free upgrade of the Doteasy Mail system to the new Doteasy SmartMail system. Our goal is to have all clients switched over to the new Doteasy SmartMail system, as it has proven to be a better email system.

We have scheduled the upgrade for your getreadytosellohio.com email accounts on _____, 2007 6:00PM PST.

The estimated time for the upgrade process is 6 hours, during which email service, including webmail login, email send and receive, and mail forwarding, will be unavailable. Any email being delivered to you at this time should be re-delivered to your accounts if the sending mail server has been configured to retry email delivery. All email services will resume functionality upon the completion of the upgrade. Existing email user accounts, including emails, email data, folders and account settings and email aliases will be transferred over automatically for you.

Due to Doteasy SmartMail's increased security and alertness against spam, there are a few changes that you need to note. These changes include new password requirements, new SMTP settings and more. To ensure a smooth transition from the Doteasy Mail to Doteasy SmartMail, Please visit our Upgrade Information page for these changes prior to your scheduled upgrade.

It seems that Doteasy domain email (____@yourdomainname.com) is having problems again with selective clients. For any clients hosting their domain on Doteasy (particularly if you're using the domain's email services through them) and the email is a problem situation for them, two suggestions to remedy the situation permanently come to mind...

    1. You could not use your domain email, and instead use a
gmail, hotmail , yahoo or other free email address (some of those mentioned are web-based). All of these have options to help you import your Outlook Express address book into them. This would still allow you to use Doteasy as the host of your site, keeping your hosting option cost free. If you would like to use this option, please set up your new email address and then contact me to put the new email address on your site. I would also recommend that you send out an email notifying everyone you want to stay in contact with of your new email address.

    2. If using the domain email is important to you, then you probably need to look at a reputable paid hosting option. Please
contact me if you'd like more information about transferring your domain to a paid host (about $19 to transfer and $120/yr for the hosting).

  • December 13, 2006 Email Delays Announcement
I received the following announcement from Doteasy in December. Any clients hosting their domain on Doteasy (particularly if you're using the domain's email services through them) may experience email delays in December and possibly into January. Also just an FYI for you non-Doteasy clients, I hear this is a problem across the board with MANY different email servers right now due to the massive amounts of holiday advertising.

    From the email I received:
Delayed Mail Delivery - Holiday Spammers

We have received a few reports on delays in receiving emails at your Doteasy.com email accounts. Our Customer Service team has advised you that the delay in mail delivery was largely due to a sudden influx of spam. Let us better explain this to you.

Due to the fast approaching holidays, spammers are stepping up their efforts in distributing their advertisements. Studies performed by the industry's anti-spam product leaders suggest that approximately a billion of spam is sent each day worldwide. Doteasy.com server statistics show that our mail servers are hit with more than a million of spam each day, which is close to quadruple the hits in the previous month. Mail servers are designed to handle large number of emails, but with the sudden influxes, even the most powerful mail server requires time to digest all the emails. Hence, mail delivery is delayed. It is unfortunate that mail server has to work so much harder to process the large load of emails, a large percentage of which is junk mail.

We at Doteasy have already launched a series of actions to ease the pressure off our current mail servers:
    1. We have implemented new measures and procedures to keep monitor
and ensure the effects of spam is kept to lowest.
    2. We have employed more mail servers to alleviate the load of our existing mail servers.

We have all reasons to expect the delays in mail delivery and the other effects of spam on our mail servers to be alleviated over the next course of time, and our email users will see the improvements in our email services. We thank you for your patience and your continued support. Thanks as always for being a Doteasy customer.

    Regards,
    Doteasy Team
